AGM Notice: PDF Photos(Google Drive): Link International Symposium on Advanced Boiler Technology 2017 21 - 23 June 2017, Hong Kong Symposium Venue: Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Workshop Venue: N102, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University The science and technology of boiler technology has been a cornerstone of energy generation for the last 150 years, and it is still relevant in a foreseeable future. With the recent strive in emission control and reduction in carbon production, the need to achieve better performance while minimizing losses has grown ever more important. This is a hard-pressing matter for the Asia Pacific region, where most countries in the region saw immense economic growth over the past 30 years. Emergent economies also mean growing energy demands, while energy operators are working hard to balance between tightening emission standards and controlling operating costs. Therefore, there is a great need for energy operators around the world to master the latest development in advanced boiler technologies - what are the plausible engineering solutions to improve their existing boilers to conform to new emission standards. For operators looking for new assets, they want to know all plausible engineering solutions, and all the tangible benefits of such solutions. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Hong Kong Section is proud to present the International Symposium on Advanced Boiler Technology and Workshop. ASME has been the leader in setting standards for boiler design and operation which are revolving around power industry, thanks to its robust system. The three-day event comprises of two major activities: Symposium Photos (Google Drive): Workshop Photos (Google Drive):
We aim at attracting engineers and professionals from boiler and energy disciplines to join this event in Hong Kong and our ultimately goal is to provide a platform for advance boiler technology knowledge sharing as well as the experience sharing on best practices on asset management and operation control. In this innovative series of activates, different focuses on state-of-the-art boiler technologies and related topics will be included such as:

Steam produced in a boiler can be used for a variety of purposes including space heating, sterisation, drying, humidification and power generation. In the past, improper design of boilers caused explosions which led to loss of life and property. Modern designs attempt to avoid such mishaps and offer several benefits. This course aims at broadening engineers’ knowledge in design, supply, testing and commissioning procedures, operation and maintenance, as well as legislation related to boiler systems currently used in Hong Kong. However, to most engineers, information on the lift systems is very limited although such systems are so important to all of us living and working in high rise buildings. In this course, you will be given a detailed introduction to four aspects of a lift system. First, you will learn about the overall structure and safety features of a typical lift and all the statutory regulations governing the use of it. Second, the most important component of a traction lift, the ropes, will be highlighted when you will appreciate the structure of ropes, their operation and maintenance. Third, ropes are moved by sheaves through friction while the sheaves are driven by electric motors. Different types of electric drives will be discussed. And finally, the mechanism behind that coordinates the operation of lifts for your convenience will be discussed in terms of traffic analysis and simulation. This four evening lecture is co-organised with ASME Hong Kong Section and supported by IAEE - The International Association of Elevator Engineers (HK-China Branch) and HKIE-MMNC Course Programme Lecture 1 21 November 2016 (Monday) at Room PQ 304 Introduction to lift and escalator safety and their protection systems (3 hours) Lecture 2 23 November 2016 (Wednesday) at Room Y301 Course content on Ropes (3 hours) Lecture 3 5 December 2016 (Monday) at Room QR403 Course content on Lift drives (3 hours) Lecture 4 7 December 2016 (Wednesday) at Room QR403 Course content on System design and traffic analysis (3 hours)) Speaker's Bio Dr Albert So obtained BSc(Eng), MPhil and PhD, all in electrical engineering from The University of Hong Kong. Highlights Risks are everywhere and disruptive incident happen every day. Survey shows that, companies that aren’t able to resume operations within ten days of a major disruption are not likely to survive and the way that an organization manages risk can make or break its business and reputation. Therefore, building a robust and resilient organization that can quickly recover from any kind of disaster and prevent risk is crucial for the longevity of any organization. The objective of this seminar is to help organization to understand what measures can be done to improve company’s information security and business continuity. The seminar will be conducted by British Standards Institution, the originator of ISO 22301 and ISO 27001. Part I – Improve Information resilience with Information Security Management In Part I of the talk, the speaker will introduce you the internationally recognized Information Security Management system, ISO 27001, with a focus on how organizations should gather, use and store information appropriately in order to prevent the possibilities of cyber-attack and data breach, which is the two of the top threats to business continuity perceived by business Part II – Protect Business from the Unexpected with Business Continuity Management In Part II, the speaker will share with you the best practice standard for business continuity management, ISO 22301, which helps organizations to protect against and recover from disruptive incidents, from supply chain risk to extreme weather, or even terrorism, when they happen to protect their business, reputation, and minimizes financial loss in the case of an incident.
